Uses of Memory
The Uses of Memory offers a quiet making and processing space for participants to reflect on their embodied knowledge, experiences and personal memories as foundations through which political frameworks emerge. Memory, as we commonly understand it, often adheres to a sense of completeness and order imposed by dominant narratives, but this workshop aims to disrupt that paradigm. Through a partnership between Archive Liberia and the Center for Liberatory Practice & Poetry, project stewards Bilphena Decontee Yahwon and Kimi Hanauer will guide participants in beginning the process of building personal memory archives.
This workshop is hosted by Teaching at the End of Times and corresponds with the final day of the project’s exhibition in Philadelphia.
Archive Liberia Fall 2023 Book Study
BOOK DESCRIPTION: This book reviews the history of the United States - Liberia relations from the early 1820s to 2015, with particular attention paid to the role of the US armed forces. Contrary to most literature on the genesis and development of Liberia, this book demonstrates how US military power has been the primary influence shaping Liberia’s history. This includes the role played by the US military in the founding of Liberia, the protection of the country during the European formal colonial era, multiple covert operations in securing US-friendly administrations in Liberia, and direct military interventions when necessary to secure American interests in the region.
Across the Atlantic: The Migration of Black People from Baltimore to Liberia
During the 1831-1832 legislative session, the Maryland general assembly approved a legislature that gave the Maryland State Colonization Society (MSCS) the duty of removing free Black Marylanders from the state of Maryland to the colony of Liberia. With this, the Maryland State Colonization Society created a new settlement in Cape Palmas, Liberia (Maryland-in-Liberia) that would serve as a 'container' for free Black people and satisfy the white hysteria caused by the Southampton Insurrection. This migration and state-enforced settlement would intertwine the histories of Liberia and Baltimore.
